A Little Cooler
This workshop revolved around a project called “A Little Cooler” for which I was responsible for sourcing reused materials and community engagement. The project, led by the architecture firm AGONY, explores imaginative solutions to the problem of urban heat risk throughout the city. Using the power of art and design, the project aims to shape perception, strengthen communities and find solutions to alleviate heat risk.
Our team was tasked to use sustainable material choices and innovative methods of fabrication to not only shade, but incorporation of interactive elements along with programming that is replicable to other neighborhoods and municipalities.
This project transforms Hoyt Field’s basketball bleachers into a space for gathering, creativity, and climate action. At its heart it is a shade pavilion, constructed from salvaged steel sourced from a deconstructed water tour and cancelled project, reimagining material reuse as a form of ecological and social resilience.
The structure features a canopy of banners co-designed with community members, including local residents, and K-12 students at two local community centers. Each banner reflecting the neighborhood’s stories and identities. In order to co-design, we hosted a series of workshops with community groups
